Crested geckos are charming reptiles that have captured the hearts of pet lovers for their striking looks and low-maintenance care. These friendly creatures are perfect for both beginners and seasoned reptile enthusiasts. In this guide, we will explore essential aspects of crested gecko care, covering their husbandry requirements, humidity levels, lighting needs, temperature preferences, feeding habits, and enclosure sizes.

Understanding Crested Geckos

Crested geckos, scientifically known as Correlophus ciliatus, hail from the lush tropical forests of New Caledonia. As nocturnal creatures, they are recognized for the distinct crests that run from their eyes to the base of their tail. Their color variations can range from red, yellow to black and everywhere in between, and they have the ability to fire up and fire down depending on their environment. These fascinating reptiles are attractive with their nature, but proper understanding and knowledge are crucial to their care and well-being.

Husbandry Requirements

Enclosure Size

Selecting the right size enclosure is vital for your crested gecko's happiness. The size of enclosure you need depends on the size of your gecko. A good rule of thumb is:

  • Hatchlings: you want something that will allow them to find their food easily, a tank size around 8"x8"x12" or 6-quart plastic storage box with proper ventilation.

  • Juveniles: once above 5 grams finding food and water should no longer be an issue. They can be now housed in a tank size around 12"x12"x18" or equivalent sizing.

  • Sub Adults/Adults: 1 single Adult can be housed in a 12"x12"x18" at a minimum. Once into adulthood it is recommended to move to at least an 18"x18"x24" or similar sizing.

Quick reference

  • Hatchling Crested gecko (2-5g) housing size:  8x8x12" terrarium or 2–5 gallon tank

  • Juvenile Crested gecko (6-30g) housing size: 12x12x18" terrarium or 5–10-gallon tank

  • Ault Crested gecko (35-60+g) housing size: 12x12x18" (minimum), 18x18x24" terrarium or 20+ gallon tank

Crested geckos are an arboreal species and require height over the amount of floor space. A taller setup is recommended to replace their natural climbing environment. Providing adequate vertical space is essential since crested geckos love to explore and climb.

Substrate

Choosing the right substrate plays a key role in maintaining a healthy habitat. Consider options such as:

  • Coconut fiber/organic mulch/Bio active styles: Retains moisture and supports humidity.

  • Paper towels: Easy to clean and replace, easy to maintain a sterile environment in a quarantine situation or mostly used in breeder scenarios where laying females' eggs would be hard to locate in a dirt-based substrate. (all of hatchlings are on paper towels as this is the safest option when they learn how to catch and hunt insects)

  • Reptile carpet: Provides a reusable option, however we do not recommend as their nails can be hung un the fibers if the carpet and pose a concern for ripped nails.

Décor and Hiding Spots

Creating a comfortable, naturalistic habitat is crucial for your gecko's well-being. Incorporate items like:

  • Branches, ledges and vines: For climbing and perching.

  • Hiding spots: Such as caves or foliage to mimic their native habitat.

This setup allows crested geckos to engage in natural behaviors, reducing stress and enhancing their comfort. In our experience sometimes cluttered with foliage helps them feel more secure. At the end of the day just look at the forest its very rarely symmetrical.

Humidity Levels

Crested geckos thrive in humidity levels of 60% to 80%. Maintaining adequate humidity is crucial for their health.

Maintaining Humidity

Regular misting is necessary to keep the humidity in check. Mist the enclosure once or twice a day based on your home’s humidity. A shallow water bowl should be available too, but make sure it’s shallow enough to prevent drowning. A WATER BOWL SHOULD ALWAYS BE AVALIBLE!

When misting, the goal is to spike up the humidity level as if it just rained, after spraying allow the environment to have a "dry down" period to where it returns to a lower humidity range. For example, in the morning the tank reads 59% humidity so you mist the enclosure to "spike" it up to around 80%-85% then you would allow the enclosure to "dry down" back to the 60% range. Once you do this for a couple of days you will learn what your misting routines will look like. Everyone is different and truly depends on your location in the world. A person in Arizona is likely going to mist more often than someone in Florida.

Using a hygrometer will help you monitor humidity levels and ensure your gecko remains in a comfortable environment.

Temperature Requirements

Crested geckos prefer a comfortable temperature range. Aim for: 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most people are able to achieve this as their homes operate in this range most times of the years.

Heating

In most homes, additional heating is not needed. However, in cooler climates or winter months, consider using a room heater as opposed to heating the enclosure. It is better to use ambient ways of heating the space as opposed to direct heating options. If you must use direct heating options, ALWAYS use a thermostat as heat can be very fatal to your crested gecko companion.

Lighting Requirements

Crested geckos are nocturnal and do not require UVB lighting. However, providing a low-intensity UVB light for a few hours daily can be beneficial, especially for breeding geckos. The most important thing is to give your crested gecko a proper light cycle.

Lighting Schedule

To mimic their natural environment, keep the lights on for about 10 to 14 hours a day and then turn them off to allow your gecko to rest. You can extend these ranges to match the time of year and breeding cycles. longer days vs shorter days.

Feeding

Crested geckos are omnivorous and need a balanced diet of both plant and animal-based foods.

Diet Composition

  1. Commercial Diets: Many companies offer specially formulated diets for crested geckos providing essential nutrients.

  2. Fruits: Offer fresh fruits like mashed bananas, pureed mango, and apples as occasional treats. For example, a small spoonful of pureed mango can be a delightful addition.

  3. Live Food: Small insects such as crickets, roaches and mealworms can make up a portion of their diet, providing necessary protein.

Feeding Frequency

You should feed juvenile and hatchling crested geckos daily while adults can be fed every other day. Remember to remove any leftover food after 24 hours to prevent mold and contamination in the enclosure.

Handling Your Crested Gecko

Crested geckos can be gently handled, but it’s crucial to introduce them to handling slowly. Allow them to adapt to their new home for at least two weeks before attempting to handle them.

Tips for Handling

  • Always support their body properly to avoid injury.

  • Keep sessions brief and gentle at first, gradually extending the time as they become more comfortable.

  • Pay attention to their body language. If they seem stressed, it’s best to return them to their habitat.

Health and Common Issues

Crested geckos are generally hardy, but you should still be alert to their health needs.

Signs of a Healthy Gecko

  • Bright, clear eyes and clean skin.

Common Health Issues
